Here’s the catch: San Diego comes with what locals call a “sun tax.” It’s pricey to live in “America’s Finest City” and the surrounding county, and the region perennially ranks among the most expensive in the country. It’s often a landlord’s market on the apartment front, and home prices are well beyond what many locals can afford. Still, millions of people manage to make San Diego their place in the sun. We spent more than 30 hours conducting extensive research on San Diego’s apartments, neighborhoods and residential options. We looked at more than 80 apartment complexes in the San Diego area, categorizing them by location and comparing them with a set list of criteria. Besides basic information such as year constructed, number of units and average rent prices, we factored in community amenities such as outdoor spaces and fitness facilities.

Companies such as West Elm and CB2 have developed a whole range of apartment-size sofas and seating for small-space dwellers, and for good reason: The sofa is usually the most space-consuming furniture piece in a home. Opt for sofas that have a shallower depth, 37 inches or less. Skip oversized, rolled arms — which can waste a foot or more of floor space — and pick a modern, streamlined style with thinner arms. Less arm space also means more seating; in fact, an armless sofa or a one-armed chaise is the ultimate space-saving seating solution.

This white-washed rustic kitchen embodies laid-back country life. Image Source: A EdwardsYou’re standing in your cozy rustic kitchen admiring the warm glow that only aged wood cabinets and a natural fireplace can emit, and the smell of pine trees surrounds your senses. You drop into your favorite plaid-covered chair, resting your stocking feet close to the open flame of the wood-burning stove — just close enough to warm your cold toes. The logs in the fire seem to pop to the tune of the kettle boiling on your huge cooking stove…..Were you there for just a moment? Escaping the hectic fast-paced city life and dreaming of what a quiet country life would be like.  In this article we are not talking about a country kitchen where toile fabric covers every corner and ceramic roosters perch on your window sills and countertops.Rather, here you will find images and descriptions of rustic kitchens that feature amazing natural wood elements, old stones that have tumbled through time, rough hewn wood beams, and a few unexpected modern elements that mix surprisingly well with rustic life.  If the rustic-style is not for you, then consider reading our 10 Amazing Modern Kitchen Cabinet Styles.Let’s take a look at these time-worn treasures to see if we can create this intimate aesthetic in our own home:This is such a cozy country-style kitchen with open shelving, hooked rug, rustic flooring and plates on the wall. Image Source: Smith and VansWide wooden floor planks, wood ceiling beams, time-worn wood cabinets — all of these wonderful wooden elements bring nature inside your rustic country kitchen. If you love wood-based designs then also read Timber Architecture: 10 Benefits of Wood-based Designs. The knots in the wooden pine wall show where tree branches once grew, the grooves in the ceiling beams show where blistered hands once scraped the wood clean of bark, and the floor boards creek with age under your feet.  In order to achieve the aesthetic of a rustic kitchen, wooden elements are a must. The intimate kitchen in the image below features plenty of dark wood that seems to radiate warmth. The hint of barn-colored red in the island adds a nice country touch, as well. Mimic this design to achieve your own cozy country kitchen. The warm dark wood and pop of red in the island create a cozy glow in this rustic kitchen. Image Source: Bede DesignNature has more to offer other than just wood. Stone can be an amazing feature to add to your rustic kitchen. Whether you add hints of stone in a fireplace hearth, or cover an entire wall with large tumbled river rock — consider adding some element of stone to your kitchen. If a wooden floor in your kitchen seems like too much , then maybe consider adding a flagstone floor throughout. This would certainly add a nice bit of aggregate to your home— just be sure to add a few area rugs for a warm layered look.Other rock elements could be used in your kitchen counter tops, such as quartz or granite. Essentially, any natural mineral is a fine choice for a rustic kitchen design. The stone wall and wood beams mix perfectly together. Image Source: karl NeumannMaybe an entirely wood-covered kitchen is not your style, but you still crave some small elements of the natural rustic aesthetic.Take a cue from the modern kitchen featured below. Its main design is that of a contemporary kitchen with clean white cabinets, black walls and shiny stainless steel. Then look around the kitchen a bit more and you begin to notice natural wood floors, wooden stools and an amazing wooden ladder incorporated into an otherwise modern light fixture. This kitchen design mixes modern with rustic in smart manner, allowing the homeowners to enjoy the best of both (seemingly opposing) design worlds in one cohesive kitchen. This modern kitchen has some small rustic elements, such as the wooden ladder. Image Source: Trickle Creek HomesDark wood can seem too imposing for some smaller, dimly lit kitchens, so consider adding painted or bleached white wood instead. The wooden ceiling beams in the kitchen featured below are solid wood, but are bleached with a white stain, allowing the room to seem rustic, yet large and airy, too. The cupboards are made again of solid wood, but a light-colored pine wood that is far from dark or dreary.Everything still feels rustic and countrified, yet somehow open and modern, as well. This may be a look you could love for your rustic kitchen design. This rustic kitchen still seems light and airy instead of dark and dreary. Image Source: Parker HouseTime-worn, aged and chipping paint is essential in any rustic kitchen design.  This is not a look for all those Type A personalities that love a perfect, chip-free home (who can blame them). Instead, it’s a relaxed look that says, “My home is your home. Go ahead, put your feet on the coffee table.”Primitive painted pieces are easy to find at most flea markets, so go on a treasure hunt for the perfectly worn table or cabinet for your relaxed-style kitchen. If the chipped paint is too much for you to bear, then consider repainting a few pieces, but keep the grooves, dents and dings in order to keep that rustic vibe.Primitive paint can add a nice rustic vibe. Image Source: Gage HomesAsk any designer and they will agree that accessories can make or break a design space. Initially, when imagining a farmhouse-style kitchen, one may think of ceramic country roosters pecking on window sills, but this look is becoming outdated.Instead, surprise the eyes with accessories that are anything but country. Look at the kitchen featured below, it is accessorized with ornate, carved mirrors and stone pineapple statues. What a neat design idea!If you want to stick with a rustic style, then consider accessorizing your kitchen with navajo rugs, woolen textiles and twig-style furnishings.  Have fun, and don’t be scared to play up your kitchen with fun, quirky decor items. This rustic kitchen has some fancier accessories such as carved mirrors and pineapple statues. Image Source: Island ArchitectsWhat emits warmth and glow better than a real wood-burning fireplace?  Pay tribute to days-gone-by with an actual wood burning stove in your rustic kitchen. You can add a true heirloom stove, or consider installing a new wood-cook stove that may be more practical. Either way, you will achieve the country aesthetic you crave. Imagine the baking and cooking you can do over open flame, filling your kitchen with the scent of rising pizza or bread dough. The wood stove in the image below is one to take a look at. Its floor-to-ceiling stone surround emits a real rustic vibe that is worthy of copying.A stone wood burning fireplace is a great feature in this rustic kitchen. Image Source: Summer OurUp until now, most of the rustic designs we have looked at have been quite masculine in nature.  They have been woodsy, manly and maybe emit too much testosterone for us females. The kitchen featured below is one that still maintains its countrified side, yet has a female, sophisticated flair to it, as well.  This design can be achieved quite simply by adding some prettier textiles such as fabric-covered chairs, curtains and a pretty area rug. Plus, some of the cabinets are white, new and more modern in design.Meet in the middle by uniting the manly with the womanly in your rustic kitchen. The two mesh very well together when done properly. This is a lovely feminine version of a rustic kitchen. Image Source: Design Visions of AustinNothing says, “Welcome to my cozy rustic kitchen,” more than a huge wrought-iron pot rack with gleaming copper pots dangling from the ceiling.Pot racks can be made of all sorts of inventive materials— you don’t have to buy an expensive one from the store.  Consider repurposing old window frames, hanging one from the ceiling with chains and adding large S-hooks around the frame for pot holders. Or repurpose a large piece of driftwood as a woodsy, nature-inspired rack. Or an old barn ladder would be great, too.Essentially, use your imagination and you can come up with an inexpensive rustic-inspired pot rack, adding a must-have element to your country kitchen. This metal pot rack adds a nice rustic flair. Image Source: SandvoldblandaNot every rustic kitchen has to be covered in bare wood. You can still achieve the design with elements of color. In fact, in the kitchen below, the only bare wood to be found is in the flooring—everything else is painted a deep country blue. Yet, it still gives the impression of a rustic inspired kitchen. The trick to maintain this aesthetic is to paint walls and cabinets in a country-color. Certainly, a bright lime green would not achieve the same outcome. Check with your local paint store to see if they have a line of paints that are considered heritage or nature-inspired.Colors from the out-of-doors would certainly work well. Think browns, greens and barn-red. If you are unsure of your color choice, then cover a few walls in paint swatches and live with it for awhile to see what works best, and refer to How to Choose The Right Color Palette For Your Home. These country blue cabinets add a bright new color to rustic design. Image Source: Archer BuchananWhether you live in a bustling city or in the middle of nowhere, the country life can be yours through a rustic-inspired kitchen—You don’t have to live in the country to have one.Simply add nature-inspired elements to your kitchen through wood, stone, accessories and color. Oh, and don’t forget that amazing wood-burning stove. Rustic kitchens can be so cozy, welcoming and warm. The kitchen truly is the heart of the home, so consider creating this inviting environment in your home today. What would you like to see in your rustic kitchen?

Dotted throughout the United States are master planned communities made up of homes that are identical to each other.  As each home resembles the one next to it, it becomes more desirable to have an interior that is unique and offers a perception of affluence.  We all want to have our homes look like that of high end professionally decorated mansions, but often lack the funds to achieve it.  Living in a space that looks expensive and is easy on the budget does not have to be out of reach. Anyone can have dapper dwellings with a few careful considerations.A space that lacks crown molding tends to look average.  The lack of detailing tying the walls and ceiling together gives a space an unfinished cheapened look.  For very little money, crown molding applied to the walls provides richness to the space. When picking out molding opt for a wide trim for more impact. In fact the wider the trim the more expensive the room can look. The toughest decision anytime you decorate can be what color to paint a space.  Opting for either a crisp white or high pigment paint in a neutral hue will lend an air of sophistication and affluence to the room.  Neutral walls allow for the rotation of accent colors seasonally if desired.  Another easy trick that really adds that lux finish to a home is to paint interior doors black. It will instantly give the space an expensive vibe; just be sure to tie the doors to the rest of the décor with other uses of black accessories.Throw pillows are always a fabulous accessory for your sofa, loveseat or oversized chair. A collection of small store bought pillows appears to be trying too hard and shouts unoriginal and cheap. First, they are not quite big enough to be impactful and are too small to be of any real benefit.  Secondly, if the goal is to look luxurious, pillows that any home can have defeats that idea.  So ignore the 12-18 inch pillows that you can pick up at the local home store. Opt instead for the larger 22-inch pillow covers and stuff them with 24-inch inserts.  The overstuffed pillows offer that luxurious feel you desire. The options for window treatments are endless and cross many price points.  It is best to spend moderately on the best quality you can afford.  Avoid flimsy curtains and ones that are unlined, these are two telltale signs of poor quality.  Sure, the price might be nice, but you want your room to look elegant and expensive, right?  Instead of buying them right off the rack at the local home store, find a selection at a specialty fabric store. Their experts can help you create window treatments with in your budget that will look like you spent a lot more for them.  Once you have picked out your curtains, hang them as close to the ceiling as you can to draw your eye up and project the illusion of fullness. Curtains hung just above the window tend to look sparse. Most tract homes built come with very standard hardware finishes.  They are generally cheap, in both cost and appearance.  Builders use these bulk items, as they are more cost effective to use, but not always the best for a homeowner desiring a more custom look.  Oddly enough, hardware is also not that expensive to replace with more personalized options.  Change out the drawer pulls in the kitchen and replace them with more unique pieces. You can find them at any hardware store, specialty shop or even at a flea market.  The goal is to locate ones you love and not mirror your next-door neighbors.  You can change out the builder’s basic faucet for something more interesting as well. Any good plumbing shop can work with in your budget too.Just as with hardware, lighting is another one of those builder’s standard accessories that lack personality, character and style.  Toss out nondescript chandeliers and ceiling fans; replace them with a unique designer look.   There is no need to shop the high-end lighting stores, try scouring a flea market or second hand store for a budget friendly piece.  A bargain found on a chandelier goes a long way toward creating that expensive designer inspired look.  The right one may even have your friends talking.  Add table lamps and floor lamps in each room, too. Lighting of any kind will also create an expensive look and feel. While wall-to-wall carpet is soft and warm under foot, it is does not lend itself to a lavish look. Hardwood on the other hand provides that classic visual appeal.  It seem like a budget buster, but it will last for years making the investment well worth it, especially if you compare it to replacing carpeting every few years.  Hard wood comes in many types of wood and some are more luxurious than others are. Opt for a dark wood that will add richness to the space, similar to the idea of painting your interior doors black.  You can layer a beautiful area rug on top of the wood flooring to anchor the room and tie design elements together.Gold often considered synonymous with wealth can actually appear rather tawdry.  Gilded frames, gold baubles and brass lighting can be tacky when all used together.  The color can be hard on the eyes while trying too hard to provide a luxurious look. Silver, chrome and brushed nickel are easier on the eyes and offer a truly polished look.  Trade out those old gold frames for some new silver ones; replace that brass table lamp with a brushed nickel lamp and sell the gold at your next yard sale.  Silver will also help to reflect light better than gold will, adding to the look you want to achieve.Furniture is usually the single largest investment made in a room, but not always an area that one can invest in heavily.   Yet, spending on cheap poorly made furniture will cost more in the end. Instead, try shopping secondhand stores, consignment shops and estate sales for well-constructed pieces to be reupholstered.  This will give you the opportunity to customize your look for a fraction of what a high-end designer piece would run you without sacrificing any desired quality. As Albert Hadley once said,” There’s no point in creating something beautiful for someone who is a slob….” He is right. The easiest and least expensive way to make a home look posh is to keep it cleaned. Dust and vacuum weekly, avoid clutter and your home will shine.  All of the other touches will stand out and be noticeable.  Isn’t that the whole point of a designer like home?So you can see it does not take a lot to achieve an expensive look. Just follow these tips and tricks and you too can have a great looking home on reasonable budget.  How do you give your home a designer look on a dime store budget?

The best modular shelving systems will encourage individual expression and personal style. An investment in both design and practicality, they are something that we choose to live with (design is arguably always a choice). Famed industrial designer Dieter Rams once remarked: “I am convinced that a well-thought-out design is decisive to the quality of a product. A poorly-designed product is not only uglier than a well-designed one but it is of less value and use. Worst of all it might be intrusive.” This quote, from a speech on ‘Design by Vitsœ’ presented by Rams in New York, 1976, remains pertinent today.

Located in Penafiel, Portugal, House of Four Houses was envisioned by PROD for a small family. Each of the four persons living here is represented by an individual volume. According to the architects, “three of the volumes are orthogonally organized around a core, whilst a fourth rotates to match the direction of an existing neighboring building. The modest dimensions of the existing building determined the scale of the house while the vernacular identity influenced its layout.” The spaces between buildings are each covered by a flat transparent roof, which floods the dwellings in natural light.
The units are comprised of three levels: “On the basement there is a garage, wine storage and laundry room. On the main floor the bedrooms are located on the east side, while the kitchen, dining room and living room are placed on the west, close to a terrace with privileged view to a valey. Over the living room there is a mezzanine with a small office.” The materials employed for the design (zinc, local granite and patinated pine boards) offer a texture diversity which makes the project stand out. If you believe that green does not work in a trendy and minimal contemporary bedroom, then think again! A green accent wall is easy to shape and it brings that much needed warmth to an otherwise cool and mundane interior. Just repeat the color in the room using vivacious bedding, accessories, nightstands or even a couple of lovely vases and you have an inviting bedroom that is both energetic and relaxing. Those who feel that an accent wall in green or décor are not your thing can still add the color by placing a couple of potted plants to fill up those empty corners. It is an easy, eco-friendly and healthy choice to turn to that will instantly alter the mood in the bedroom.

The String shelf system was designed in 1949 by the swedish architect and designer Nils Strinning. Easy to assemble and reposition, this well-formed system, with its ingenious design, is stable and functional. String® is available in several formats: the classic system, plex (launched in 1953), pocket (2005) and works (2014). The SH05 Arie shelf was designed by Arik Levy in 2008 for E15. The clever design enables a multitude of seamless combinations, made possible without any obvious visual repetition. Arie functions well as a bookcase, room divider, sideboard or storage unit.

We now shine the spotlight on a series of modern powder rooms that are magnificent in their own right. Stone is the material of choice in the bathroom below, which makes the Haven Stone Bathtub with Base from Apaiser an ideal choice for the space! Note how details such as a sculptural pendant light add layers of eye-catching design to this interior. Sometimes less is more, and when the powder room is all about the tub, it’s not a bad idea to go bold. Next we see Apaiser’s Haven Stone Bathtub (this time without the base), and if black isn’t your tub color of choice, note that in true Apaiser tradition, the piece is available in a variety of finishes. Here’s another modern black bathtub in a grey bathroom, and this time the tub is available through Modern Bathroom Vanities.

Looking out the window to see a massive mountain range unraveling its majesty is in itself a reason for happiness. Add a spacious, modern residence framing that view and you get a dream home. The Butte Residence by Carney Logan Burke Architects unveils an inspiring contemporary architecture within an almost wild, rural landscape. Located in Jackson, Wyoming, “on an extraordinary site on a butte“, the imposing house is not only a cozy place to call home, but also a home office where art is inspired by something naturally massive and awe-inspiring.
A fabulous 38-acre site shelters this imposing house and artist studio, while the mountains beyond shape stunning views. A creative studio overlooking astounding mountain panoramas is the place where ideas come to life. Simplicity reigns in the art studio as well as in the social and private spaces. Uncluttered rooms adorned with large windows provide scenic panoramas mirrored in the choice of materials and textures. Photographed by Paul Worchol, the majestic home fits perfectly in its environment. Indoor spaces are just as cozy as outdoor areas, seamlessly connecting the interiors to the outdoors.
This is a home perfect for a relaxed lifestyle, do you agree?

The terms ‘contemporary’ and ‘modern’ are often used interchangeably when describing design. It’s a common faux pas and one of which this writer is certainly guilty. In design lexicon the two words have contrasting and quite distinct meanings. Describing their difference at a somewhat rudimentary level: contemporary makes reference to the present-day – that which is current and of the time – whereas modern alludes to the past, specifically that of Modernism (post the First World War) and mid-20th century modern design and architecture.
