Battleship is a sturdy coat hook with a distinctive industrial appearance. Developed by English designer David Cathro of aCathroDESIGN, this modern and sleek functional piece is made from laser cut steel with a high quality semi-gloss powder coated finish. According to the designer, the aim of the project is to impart a modern industrial feel to the room, while still exuding a cozy feel. Here is more from the official description of the project we received: “The hook is shown in a newly refurbished private residential interior. The owners wanted a fresh approach to the interior scheme and chose to start with the kitchen first. The Battleship hooks were chosen due to their clean industrial lines and powder coated steel finish which allows them to stand up to the rigors of a daily kitchen environment“. Battleship is available in two colors (white and grey), making this creative hook design easily adaptable to a variety of modern interiors.  How to Photograph Interiors Like a Professional

The New York Institute of Photography claims that “a room is merely a shell, its appearance is an afterthought at best. Therefore most people never give much thought to making a room the the subject of a photograph. That is a mistake.” Interiors are great subjects to photograph for a myriad of reasons. A photograph can serve to capture a memory of one’s youth whether for oneself or for one’s children. It can also be used to capture furnishings and artwork for insurance purposes, or for the sale of one’s home.Talk to a professional interiors photographer and he will tell you to walk around your room, shoot the back, shoot the front, point the camera up slightly and then point the camera down slightly. You will be advised to, whenever possible, try to include the floor. Rooms without floors often create a floating and unsettled feeling. Many photographers believe that it’s important to get down on your knees and shoot from there. They say that angle offers the more complementary and inviting photograph.Your picture should tell a story. While you capture the essence of the room as a whole, do not be afraid to zoom in and focus on the smaller details, the vignettes created on coffee tables, bedside tables, dressers and bar carts. Keep shooting. You really can never take too many pictures.Another thing that photographers will tell you is to use natural lighting whenever possible. You will, however,  want to stay away from an overly bright window as it can lead to problems with exposure and white balance. Another pointer is to keep the window off to the side. If too much light is coming inside, draw the curtains or shades. Never photograph into the light, but bright light in the background is superior to indoor lighting. You may want to shoot your room at various points throughout the day to see which lighting is best.A general rule of thumb is that Eastward rooms should be taken in the morning and Westward in the afternoon.Rooms with Northern and Southern exposure should be taken when the rooms are their brightest. It’s best not to shoot on a dark and dreary day. If rain is in the forecast, try putting off the shoot, if at all possible, until the sun begins to shine again. For a gentler, softer light you may prefer to photograph your room at dawn or dusk when the sun is just rising or just about to set. A sunset can make for a magnificent interior photograph. If a flash is necessary, if you’re photographing at night or on a darker day, use a flash that has an adjustable head and point it up toward the ceiling to bounce the light from there to create a more diffused light. You will need to find your focus within the frame and to determine what is it that you are photographing.  What’s your subject? Is it the way the room is layed out? Is is the fireplace or the framed Matisse over the large turquoise couch? Perhaps the old Grand Steinway standing gracefully in the corner commands your attention. Once you’ve found your focus you’ll need to remove extraneous accessories and clutter.  Ao good photograph always tells a story.A few accessories, perhaps a few pillows on the couch, a candelabra or some photographs in silver frames sitting elegantly on the oversized black piano, can add just enough detail to tell your story without distracting one’s eye from the subject at hand. Shoot both landscape and portrait. One may tend to shoot in landscape mode, but portrait mode can make a photograph much more dramatic and powerful.Even the most tastefully done interiors need to be decluttered and streamlined for a good photograph. Look all around at what is distracting to the eye. If you’re photographing a home office, for example, look to remove cords, excessive telephones and hardware. Writing supplies should be removed or stored and displayed at minimum.Remove the waste baskets, figurines and anything that seems to distract from the focal point. The desk area should be clean and clutter-free. Tasteful accent pieces such as a small vase of tulips or a picture frame can enhance the quality of the photograph. In the kitchen remove large and cumbersome electrical gadgets and replace with large bowls of fresh fruit to add color and a lived in feel. Make sure all countertops and cabinets are as clean as can be.If linens are to be photographed make sure they are cleaned, and if possible ironed. In a bedroom, make sure the bed is well made and that the pillows are fluffed and perfectly lined up. Make sure that picture frames are all hanging as straight as possible. A crooked piece of artwork can be terribly distracting. Remove all clutter from your bedside table and replace with a small bud vase, and a book. You’ll notice that when photographing interiors less is more! What is it that you are trying to capture? What is it that you find interesting about your space. You may want to walk around the room and shoot it from as many angles as possible. Perhaps your original vision doesn’t capture as well as another. Take as many pictures as you can. The more pictures you take the better the chance you’ll find a shot that is truly spectacular.  It is not always necessary to capture the entire room. Sometimes a photograph is more powerful when part of the room is left out of the picture.Zoom in and zoom out. You will be amazed at how different your space will look from different focal points. As you select your space try to capture the emotion you are trying to create. Are you selling a home? Are you a designer who is trying to showcase your best work? Find the space and the angle that will best capture your message. You want your interior to looked lived in, not vacant and not cluttered. You want to tell a story through your photograph and the best way to do this is to stage your space with the proper tools and accessories. For ideas look to magazines and catalogues or peruse the interiors here at our site!Invest in a good camera. A good camera and a good lens will make all the difference. A good eye is one thing but you want your focus to be as clear as possible. You want your colors and lighting to be as true and accurate as possible. A basic point and shoot or your iPhone simply won’t cut it here. There are many wonderful digital SLRs out there that are quite affordable. A wide angle lens, not a fisheye, is really necessary for shooting interiors, for capturing the essence of the scene. However, the wider the lens the greater the barrel distortion, so you don’t want that either. Once you’ve taken your pictures and downloaded them to your computer you can play around with them on some free photo editing sites like PicMonkey and Picasa, FotoFlexer, iPiccy to name a few. For more extensive  editing capabilities you may want to buy a basic version of Photoshop.Pick up some home decor magazines, or browse this site! Take a look at how the professionals do it. As with any field there are certain tastes and styles that professionals have. The more pictures you can look at the more you will know what appeals to you. Take this knowledge with you and start shooting like a professional. As with anything, practice makes perfect. Perhaps initially you won’t have many favorite photographs to choose from, but the more you get out there and take pictures the better you will become and the more pleased you will be with your products. You really can never take too many pictures! Finally, have fun!

We got used to the uniqueness of each new residential architecture project in Amsterdam and this timber frame family home is no exception. Designed by the creative team at Egeon Architecten, the family villa is located on the Rieteiland-Oost island in the IJburg residential development and offers a serene living and working space. The three levels of the residence accommodate the open plan living room on the bottom floor, the private areas in the middle and an office space to literally top it all.According to the architects, the house was built with sustainability in mind, having “a heat pump and low temperature underfloor heating, natural ventilation, high insulation values of roof walls and floor, special heat-resistant glass, a sedum roof, attention to thermal bridging details and orientation”. Due to the extensive use of wood, the interiors look friendly and inviting, with large windows flooding them in natural light. The living room is by far the most welcoming room of the house, with its alluring lake views, its cute guitars and sometimes even its fluffy kitten. So bohemian!

Finding the perfect way to make a brand stand out implies a unique design solution that puts miles between the brand and its competitors. Waldo Trommler Paints (wtp) commissioned Reynolds and Reynerto prepare their small Finnish company for making a great entrance on the U.S. market. The entire branding process relies on drawing attention to finishing touches by using dazzling colors and simple objects silhouettes that hint towards the firm’s offering of simply stunning range of colors. The results are described as a combination of design elements that focus on the company’s main features – friendliness, quality and innovation: “No doubt, WTP is the most friendly and remarkable brand of paints on the shelf now. WTP has no corporate colors – it has the corporate identity, common for each design element – from business cards to packaging. Every item is bright and memorable combination of colors and objects that all together form whole the entire brand.” Spotted on Design Milk, the packaging and visual identity of “the brightest brand of paints” is evoked through a series of design elements that make WTP’s branded products put themselves in the shopping basket…

Hypnotic Light Show Turns Polygonal Shape Into Moving Sculpture [Video]

Ideas, Ravishing Light Sculpture Architecture Hypnotic Light Show Turns Polygonal Shape Into Moving Sculpture [Video] Ideas Dev Harlan Hypnotic Light Show:
“Parmenides I” is a contemporary art installation by artist Dev Harlan, consisting of an interesting mix of foam, wood, plaster, and video projections. An eight foot diameter sculpture was used as a main element in a light show that can be described as original and captivating. According to Laughing Squid, the white polygonal shape is brought to life by having various intricate patterns projected on its surface. The film below was shot during Dev Harlan’s solo exhibition “The Astral Flight Hangar”, at the Christopher Henry Gallery in New York City. We imagine it was quite interesting to watch the display live. You can observe from the movie that the effect of the light show is pretty strong, especially when complemented by great background music. We find this game of light and shapes to be a bit hypnotic and are curious to see your reactions after seeing the film…

We came across two interesting lamps designed by the same talented product and lighting designer Giles Godwin-Brown. The first one, named Nepa Lamp, is described by its creator as a ” two-dimensional lamp silhouette that seamlessly transforms into a fully functioning three-dimensional task lamp.” The wall-mounted 6 ft high lamp was built out of conventional materials – birch plywood with stainless steel and aluminum details – with the help of computer-controlled technologies. It uses friction hinges along with a pivot in the base to enable a full range movement and utilizes high-powered LED lighting to spread its functional light.  Last September, the Nepa Lamp was exhibited at Designersblock London. The second one, named Candor Lamp, is also a wall-mounted lamp, designed for commercial and industrial use. LED technology was incorporated into a cotton and timber design, with a transparent strip that creates a halo-like effect of light on the surrounding wall. Found on Design Milk, both lamps feature original details and are a fun alternative to common lighting systems. Giles Godwin-Brown describes his work: “Inspiration was taken from previous classics of the lighting industry combined with my fundamental design principles that require my products to be in their most simple form, whilst always ensuring this does not inhibit their intended function.”

Modern art usually draws attention through its original concepts, works and installations. For today, we would like to showcase a project entitled “Discovering Columbus” and developed by Japanese artist Tatzu Nishi, known for his intention to transform the bystander’s interaction with common monuments or architectural details. But as you can see, this particular statue is far from being common. Created by Italian sculptor Gaetano Russo in 1892, the marble monument rises to more than 75 feet atop a granite column.Tatzu Nishi’s project was achieved in collaboration with the Public Art Fund and consists of a true-to-scale living room built around the statue. according to official sources, the monument is located in the center of Columbus Circle at the intersection of Eighth Avenue, Broadway, Central Park South (West 59 Street), and Central Park West. It is the point from which all official distances from New York City are measured. The wallpaper coating the interior depicts famous American figures…

Painting the walls might be the easiest way to add green to the bedroom along with bedding and accessories in matching hue, but think beyond the obvious if you want a truly captivating room. Painting the ceiling in green can be a fun alternative and by leaving the walls white, you will still have a neutral and versatile backdrop that will beautifully showcase wall art and sculptural décor additions. And for those who really want a personalized solution, mixing different shades to come with your own custom green hue is indeed an exciting and enjoyable alternative. This will assure that you are proud owner of a one-of-a-kind bedroom with a shade of green that you came up with.

Window Treatment Ideas for Every Room in the House

Ideas, Rustic White And Sheer Curtains Window Treatment Ideas For Every Room In The House Ideas: Ideas, Beachy Painted Windows Window Treatment Ideas For Every Room In The House Ideas: Ideas, Rustic Wood Cornice Window Treatment Ideas For Every Room In The House Ideas: Ideas, Swing Arm Living Room Curtains Window Treatment Ideas For Every Room In The House Ideas: Ideas, Green Curtains And White Cornice Window Treatment Ideas For Every Room In The House Ideas:

Having great windows is a major plus in any home–they add character and provide much coveted natural light. Without window treatments, however, the space will look unfinished.
Whether you choose blinds, cornices or curtains, windows are a good place to anchor the room’s overall design and inject your own personal style. Before deciding on a treatment, determine what function the window covering needs to serve and the aesthetic you want it to reflect. Is it for a home office? Blinds that block out glare from the sun are a good choice. Looking for an elegant touch to a dining room window? A cornice is a stylish option. Do you need privacy? Opt for an opaque material.
Custom curtains can be expensive, so think about both utility and style before making your decision. There’s many options for great window treatment ideas that work for every budget and skill level. Below are our five favorite trends.
Wood cornices are one of the most classic window treatment ideas, but they are often overlooked as an option in contemporary homes because of their traditional nature. Used alone, however, cornices can create a sleek, modern look. Though they can be paired with curtains, stained or painted, wood boxes are perfect for the kitchen and bath, where fabric can succumb to water damage. These are best built by a skilled carpenter for a custom fit, so they can be expensive if you aren’t handy. Cornices hide curtain hardware and blend well with luxurious detailing, like crown molding, to give your home a gracious, regal look.
If you love the look of clean edges but lack the funds for custom cornices, you can still have a beautiful window without any soft goods at all by painting the window’s mullions, frame and sill instead of dressing it with curtains. Any DIYer with a steady hand and some masking tape can paint a window, and the color possibilities are endless. Try a bold pop of color to highlight the view, but for best resale value, choose a dark brown or black color for a chic look.
Swing arm curtains are one of the more unique window treatment ideas, and they haven’t seen much use in the United States in recent years. They require a special hinged curtain rod that allows you to move the curtain to stand out at a 90-degree angle from the window. Swing arm curtains are a brilliant and surprisingly inexpensive solution for bedrooms where you want to be able to block light easily without having to worry about ruining a carefully pleated or artfully scrunched curtain fabric with daily adjustments.
No list of window treatment ideas would be complete without the ultra-rich look of opaque panels. Classic velvet is great for blocking light, and it can give your bedroom the feel of a sumptuous palace. Velvet’s beautiful drape allows it to look its best when tied back and allowed to cascade to the floor. Other great choices for opaque panels include sueded fabrics, chenille weaves and silk damask. Choose an unusual color for high impact in both traditional and modern spaces.
Sheers are a bestseller for a reason: they look great in every room without costing a fortune. Sheer panels offer privacy while still allowing for plenty of light in your room, so they’re a great choice for north-facing windows or high-traffic areas. White sheers create a beautiful, breezy feel and are at their best when hung from floor to ceiling. Sheer panels are also available in a variety of colors. Match the walls for an interesting textural variation, or add a touch of color to a neutral room by choosing sheers in a pastel shade that works with the overall palette of the room…

This mesmerising Victorian house, nestled in London (De Beauvoir Conservation area), was renewed and extended this year by Scott Architects. As a curiosity, the project won the title “Best small house of the year” at The Sunday Times British Homes Awards 2013. Everybody was pretty much impressed by its inspiring, yet quirky appearance. The back of the house was garnished with a unique curvaceous extension, which pretty much adds a sense of modern to the structure. “The sculptural form of the rear extension has resulted from specific responses to the site’s immediate surroundings, while preserving the character of the existing building. The extension is designed to be part of the garden landscaping rather than the main house and this is reflected in the choice of timber cladding and green roof system.”
Without obliterating its Victorian essence, the house needed this uplifting transformation, to fit the contemporary context. The exposed brickwork blends with the oak finishings, unveiling a clean-lined interior. Low energy lighting, modern underfloor heating and last, but not least, a sloping green roof are just some of the sustainable features. At the edge of old and new, the residence celebrates the British heritage without neglecting the modern characteristics…

A vanity bench can always help if you spend a lot of time in the bathroom putting on makeup or doing your hair. Have a look at this incredibly elegant tufted bench from Alice Lane Home that could do the trick. A more compact option is a simple stool, like this gorgeously elegant selection (again from Home Bunch) that matches the style of this bathroom. This vanity from APD Architects actually has its own seated area, with a matching cushioned stool. Even a regular ottoman can work in a bathroom. This one featured on HGTV has a space against a wall right across from the vanity. This next very interesting bench featured on BHG stems out from the vanity beside it, where there’s a window. If the size and architecture of your bathroom make it work, then why not?

Inspired by the name of the trees that surround the area, the Sycamore House in Pacific Palisades, California is not actually a family home, but a laboratory for a firm that does research and seeks environmental solutions, with a focus on sustainable architecture.  The Sycamore House is wonderfully integrated into the landscape, borrowing some of the trees’ shininess. The house “takes its name from three beautiful trees on the site that originally attracted Kovac to the property; the simple geometry of the house is driven by the steeply descending site.”  The project has been designed by Kovac Architects and it has been completely built with ecological materials, reflecting the firm’s values.
The 3,400 square-foot house is a wonderful and inspirational place, with an abundance of sculpted volumes. To prove the house’s sustainable core, a series of sustainable materials have been used, such as “high fly ash content concrete, Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified woods, reclaimed wood flooring, non-VOC paints, recycled glass tile in the bathrooms, formaldehyde-free plywood for the sheathing, energy star appliances, and water-efficient fixtures.”  The view over the lush collection of Sycamore trees is stunning and as a general rule, everything inside the house looks glossy and modern. Who said that sustainable materials can’t provide a contemporary look and a really cozy environment?

The terms ‘contemporary’ and ‘modern’ are often used interchangeably when describing design. It’s a common faux pas and one of which this writer is certainly guilty. In design lexicon the two words have contrasting and quite distinct meanings. Describing their difference at a somewhat rudimentary level: contemporary makes reference to the present-day – that which is current and of the time – whereas modern alludes to the past, specifically that of Modernism (post the First World War) and mid-20th century modern design and architecture.

Here’s the catch: San Diego comes with what locals call a “sun tax.” It’s pricey to live in “America’s Finest City” and the surrounding county, and the region perennially ranks among the most expensive in the country. It’s often a landlord’s market on the apartment front, and home prices are well beyond what many locals can afford. Still, millions of people manage to make San Diego their place in the sun. We spent more than 30 hours conducting extensive research on San Diego’s apartments, neighborhoods and residential options. We looked at more than 80 apartment complexes in the San Diego area, categorizing them by location and comparing them with a set list of criteria.
