The best modular shelving systems will encourage individual expression and personal style. An investment in both design and practicality, they are something that we choose to live with (design is arguably always a choice). Famed industrial designer Dieter Rams once remarked: “I am convinced that a well-thought-out design is decisive to the quality of a product. A poorly-designed product is not only uglier than a well-designed one but it is of less value and use. Worst of all it might be intrusive.” This quote, from a speech on ‘Design by Vitsœ’ presented by Rams in New York, 1976, remains pertinent today.
Enhancing the feeling of belonging to a place where the sky joins the sea, the residential project captured below in pictures, was designed by Gómez De La Torre & Guerrero as a tranquil summer retreat for the body, mind and soul. Symbolically dubbed the Cristal House (Lima, Peru), the breathtaking villa emphasises the idea of full transparency, drawing in the sunlight. With natural light filling the double height living room, which by the way, forms the central part of the house and an elongated terrace with jacuzzi and pool lounge area to enable beautiful sea vistas, Cristal House is a wonderful place to indulge and relax.
According to the architects, the terrace “has a differentiated floor, a deck, where there is a jacuzzi and a retractable roof, made of translucent polycarbonate and aluminum, that will remain open in the summer and when closed, it will protect the house when it is uninhabited. In winter it protects from the cold, fostering a warm and lit atmosphere.” Originally, the house was intended to serve as a summer gathering place, yet the owners decided to move here permanently. Spreading over three levels, the house features a six-car garage, a kitchen with pantry, several small bedrooms and a master bedroom overlooking the sea, additional laundry for beachwear and last, but not least, a spectacular terrace to spend the evenings…
E. Cobb Architects completed the development of the imposing DellPlain Residence in USA, a project characterized by originality and contemporary design features. Defined by wood, glass and concrete, the exterior has an irregular shape, partially due to the inclined terrain the residence was built on. The house is surrounded by lush vegetation, mirrored by generously-sized windows. A picturesque stone fence flanks one of the facades, giving a rustic touch and enhancing the feel of a holiday home. Once inside, a potential visitor will probably be impressed with the overall feeling of space. Despite their modern design, the interiors are defined by wood and a subtle use of color, which inspires warmth. The open plan living room is the focal point of the project and also the place with the best views. Best for family gatherings, this interior is abundant in natural light and good vibes…
Studio LOG-URBIS completed the design and development of the Olive House, an imposing modern construction located on Pag Island in Croatia. According to the architects, the concept of the project highlights “the features of the location, such as the southern orientation of the terrain, sea vista, Mediterranean climate pleasant for outdoor living, traditional Pag stone construction, the tradition of using wood for window shades and ship decks, and the indigenous Dalmatian vegetation”. Red parparot stone native to the island was used for building terraces of different heights, overlooking the houses on the coast.
The Program of the house is designed for everyday living of a married couple, with frequent visits from their adult children and friends:”The upper floor contains basic living facilities, surrounding the atrium with an olive tree. Kitchen and dining room, terrace and summer kitchen face the slope, and the living area with a floating deck face the sea. The ground floor accomodates additional facilities – wine cellar, laundry and facility rooms, wellness and fitness areas that open up to the covered terrace and outdoor pool. The pool is shaped linearly as a swimming lane over 17 meters long.” Sustainable features of the residence include a green roof, eco-friendly materials, geothermal heat pump system and solar collectors. If you miss wintertime or if you simply dream of a “chilled” atmosphere, somewhere nearby the mountains, this post is for you. Meet Haus Walde, a gorgeous new structure built by Gogl Architekten, located in Kitzbühel, Austria. The clients requested a contemporary open plan living space with panoramic views over the Alps. It was not an easy task for the architects, because they had to identify a design line that blended perfectly with the old house, without making it look old. To avoid an architectural conflict, the new structure is enriched with a few rustic notes.
The two houses are independent one from another representing two different structures built in two different periods of time. The new house exhales more luminosity. It has floor-to-ceiling windows with wooden frame and a uncluttered interior, inspiring breeziness. These makes it a soothing place, just perfect to enjoy the breathtaking landscape. Despite the neutral fusion of colours and the concrete ceilings, the house is not a cold environment. Haus Walde is extremely modern, natural (it borrows plenty of “earthy-like” shades) and personal. The view is superb and the ambience stress-free!

Spotted on Likecool.com, the Dog House Sofa, designed by “min n mun“ is a fantastic piece of furnishing, ideal for you and your pet. All you have to do is relax and enjoy a tidy home, without worrying that your dog will turn the house upside down. Enhancing the connection between the man and his best small companion, the designer came up with the brilliant idea that allows them to better share emotions and communicate in a way they never did before. The Dog House Sofa is a modern couch, made of ash wood and comfy fabrics, that catches your dog’s interest in a second.
By combining a sofa concept with a dog house, the artist wanted to raise the awareness of how important it is to live harmonically, pointing out on the fact that the living space is not only destined for humans. Since his cute little house comes attached to the sofa, he will no longer sneak under it, looking for your attention. The nice thing is that the designer humanized the pet’s furnishing as much as possible. By blending together the two elements, the sofa and the dog house, he created a linking point between the dog and his master. The functional design allows you to use the top of the dog’s house as a coffee table…
We end today’s post by highlighting powder rooms with traditional style. Charming wall tile, an arched window and a clawfoot Astonian Luxor tub grace the light-filled bathroom below. While subway tile adds a modern look to this next featured space, striped curtains and (once again) a clawfoot tub put their traditional stamp on the room. In case you’re curious, that fabulous shower rail can be purchased at Lefroy Brooks. Be sure to check out the brand’s lovely bathtubs as well. The silver feet on this clawfoot tub make it a true standout. Surround it with black tile, and you have a powerful contrast that can’t be ignored.
A small apartment can easily look cluttered. Storage is often limited, and items without a home end up in piles on the floor and every other surface. Visible storage solutions like boxes, jars and baskets often add to the clutter problem. The solution is hidden storage. Hiding life’s necessities behind doors or other clever cover-ups gives your apartment a clean, minimalist feel. It also lets your favorite design elements — a sofa, a piece of art, a great view — be the star of the show.
With sweeping views over Port d’Andratx, it is fair to say that this Spanish Villa has one of the most privileged locations in Mallorca for those in search of a highly modern way of living. Spotted by our site on Home Designing, the five-bedroom residence has a total surface of 900 square meters and boasts an infinity pool with lounge furniture, sauna with fitness area, a separate guest house and a double garage. Its most striking feature is the swimming pool waterfall, an entertaining focal point for the inhabitants and guests alike.
We truly appreciate the mix of materials employed: Italian antique marble, stone, wood and glass were combined, resulting in beautiful interiors filled with personality. The design takes full advantage of the crib’s mesmerizing views, by framing them from every room. While the living area features wooden beams inspiring a charming traditional vibe, the kitchen for example comes with an ultra modern look. All five bedrooms have en-suite bathrooms and some extend outdoors through spectacular terraces. This massive Spanish villa is currently available for sale and estimated at 9.800.000,00 €. Think the cost fairly reflects its value?
